What's heading out?
Xavier Tillman is headed to Chicago after a productive stint in Detroit. The question is, can Detroit replace him?Pistons fans that are Michigan State alum surely find themselves in a foul mood today after learning that former Spartan Xavier Tillman has been sent down I-94 to a new home in Chicago. Tillman, who had been acquired from Sacramento last season in exchange for Jalen Johnson, had made a quite an impact in Detroit. This season he was putting up 13.7ppg, 9.3rpg, and 2.6 bpg on 49% shooting, down from last season's 16/10 season but still nothing to scoff at. His interior presence on both ends of the court was instrumental to Detroit's 36-21 record. Replacing his value will be a major challenge for Coach Frank Vogel and his staff.
The other player headed to Chicago is multi-positional perimeter man Moses Moody. Moody, who was brought over from New Orleans last season, saw his minutes greatly reduced in Detroit's crowded backcourt. He still had his moments, but it was always a fight for Moody just to get on the court in a backcourt that comprised of other talented players like Krejci, Kispert, Bowman, McLauglin, and Sheppard. So, as it happens, Moody's friendly contract became a lucrative trade chip and one of the best ways for the Pistons FO to plug other holes on the roster, especially interior defense. This will be Moody's 5th team in 5 seasons.
What's coming in?
Ivan Rabb returns to Detroit with a chip on his shoulder. Can he finally bring a ring to Motown? As for the return, let's start with the feel-good story. Longtime Piston Ivan Rabb is returning to Detroit to wrap up an illustrious career. The 32-year old Power Forward spent 5 seasons as a Piston from 2024 to 2029, a stretch that included a Finals run in 2026. After being traded to the Jazz in 2029, Rabb turned into a journeyman with stops in Utah, Golden State, Philly, and Washington. He now returns to a familiar city but an unfamiliar roster, where he'll be asked to replicate as much of Xavier TIllman's production as he can. For Detroit, a lot will hinge on whether Rabb can fill Tillman's shoes.
Arriving alongside Rabb are two other big men in veteran PJ Washington and 24-year old rim protector Isaiah Jackson. Washington, a career journeyman now joining his 12th team -- including being a part of last season's Hawks championship run -- adds a veteran locker room presence and championship experience. Jackson, meanwhile, brings a tenacious defensive game and not much else to the table. He'll likely be given a chance to secure the 3rd string Center role, hopefully replicating some of James Wiseman's function as a defensive anchor.
The final and most exciting new Piston is surely 19-year old French phenom Zaccharie Risacher. The former 7th pick in the draft has had an excellent rookie campaign on a middling Wizards team, putting up 9.2 ppg in 18 mpg and 42% shooting, including 37% from three. Risacher's profile as a three-level scorer with a nifty pull-up game has no equal on the current Pistons roster. But he'll have to earn his minutes at either SG or SF, with the likes of Vit Krejci, Corey Kispert, Jaden McDaniels, and fellow rookie Ausar Thompson all vying for playing time.
Risacher was one of the most sought-after talents in this year's draft. He'll now get to run with draft class teammates Reed Sheppard, Ausar Thompson, and Kavion Pippen. Should be fun!The upshot
So, what does it mean for Detroit's chances this season? Moody and Tillman are both excellent players who were having very good seasons. Replacing their production will be the first and most important question for Vogel and his staff. Let' look at the Depth Chart as it stands:
PG: Bowman / McLaughlin / Krejci
SG: Sheppard / Kispert / Risacher
SF: Krejci / McDaniels / Thompson
PF: Rabb / Clowney / Washington
C: Wiseman / Pippen / Jackson
Like many deals in the CSL, the unspoken but essential piece of these trades are the salary implications. The Pistons are shaving about $12M due the swapping of Tillman's multi-year $16M+ contract for Rabb's $12M expiring. That's a big deal for a team that has to find the salary to resign Vit Krejci, Corey Kispert, and, if possible, Ky Bowman. Jackson's friendly $4.6M contract is viewed as a positive, while Washington's 2-year veteran minimum will also come in handy come the offseason.
