Early Bird Rights

Post by orangeparka »

It's time we added them. There's really no reason for us not to have it, especially since FA is done manually anyway.

It doesn't make sense that teams like MEM and ATL won't be able to re-sign their FAs without cap space. It's just an unfair handicap to teams IMO.
EARLY BIRD EXCEPTION -- This is a weaker form of the Larry Bird exception. It also allows teams to exceed the cap to re-sign their own free agents, but with more limited contracts than the Larry Bird exception. To qualify for this exception the player must play for two seasons without clearing waivers or changing teams as a free agent (see question number 33 for details and nuances to this rule). A team may use the Early Bird exception to re-sign its own free agent for up to 175% of his salary in the previous season2 (not over the maximum salary, of course) or 104.5% of the average salary in the previous season, whichever is greater (see question number 32 for the definition of "average salary"). Early Bird contracts must be at least two seasons in length, which prevents teams from using the Early Bird to sign a one-year contract, then signing the same player with the full Larry Bird exception the following season. Early Bird contracts can be up to four years in length, with raises up to 7.5% of the salary in the first season of the contract. Early Bird is also a component of the Veteran Free Agent exception, and qualifying players are called "Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA.

Added it to the OP.

Basically, full bird rights need three years and early bird rights need two years. If you have two bird years, you can exceed the cap and offer a contract (175% of previous) or a midlevel type deal.

Well, for example Memphis couldnt use early bird rights because Al got traded and with that early Bird rights are gone.

Anyway there wont be changes like that inseason. We can discuss it next offseason.

Bird rights are only gone when the player signs with another team in free agency. Bird rights are retained in trades.

I like this idea but not for this offseason.. I think rules need to be introduced slowly so everyone can plan for them. For example had ATL known about that rule, he'd be able to re-sign Millsap and Williams for a good price next year, which would probably bump their value on trade talks.

So, basically, yes, but only 2 years from now (2016 FAP)

They already dealt Williams.. And that's a small example
I don't like mid-season rules. It changes the dynamic of the league in-season without giving GMs time to plan. Every NBA rule but CAP changes are introduced with enough time so teams can adapt to it before it's valid.

Williams has two bird years already so it doesn't affect him (will have three in the offseason).

Well it ain't the deadline yet at least! Lol.

No. It unnecessarily complicates the league, restricts player movement, and just drives up salaries.

Agree with Jestor. I think it's already too easy to retain free agents. Teams have zero respect for the salary cap as it is and just blow by it.

Exactly my thinking. League would get stale with so many ways to keep free agents in place.

Furthermore, Early Bird exceptions only qualify if they've spent two years playing for the same team, so when a player is traded, they lose their Early Bird Rights, even though a team keeps full Bird Rights. A player has the right to veto a trade that would cause them to lose their Early Bird rights (such as Devean George).

This would require a lot of hassle tracking it.

Well I gotta agree with Jestor here. So after reading every comment I'm against it too.

I'm all for the realism that comes from the real life CBA. Doesn't make sense not to have them IMO

If it involves special tracking then I wouldn't want it. But surprised DDS does not support this as its not a new rule...

Yeah even though it's really about Beverly, because every time OP proposes a rule change, it's to benefit him.

Ironic part is, because the clock resets for Early Bird Rights after trades, it wouldn't apply anyway.
